One of the places where Mother and Daughters Quilt Ministries donates quilts is a missionary couple who works in the Muslim community here in the United States. While the couple has asked we not use their names or share where they are located, we can tell you a bit about their work. This couple is in the process of building relationships with the Muslim people in their community. They have befriended their neighbors and try to meet needs they see as friends, not as missionaries. And it is working. The wife has developed several relationships with women in the community and has blessed them with baby quilts when new babies arrive. One family had a new baby, received a baby quilt which opened the door to a greater relationship with the mom. As a result, the other children in the family were also given quilts along with the mom. As this relationship has developed, an older son, who was living in the Middle East, returned home, disillusioned with his Islamic faith. Because of the relationships already established, the missionary couple were able to share the Gospel with this young man. Pray that his heart will be opened, and he will accept the truth of the Gospel. And this opportunity was all because of a quilt given to a mom with a new baby.
Lord, bless this couple as they minister to their Muslim neighbors. May Your love break through the darkness. Amen
Matthew 25: 35-36
"For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you took care of Me; I was in prison and you visited Me."

Happy Birthday, Mom!
Today is our mother's 87th birthday. Happy Birthday to an amazing daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother! We love you dearly and are blessed to be your family.
I have been looking at old pictures of Mom from different seasons of her life and have noticed something similar in the pictures. There is a sweetness, a sereneness, a peace on her face in the pictures. From an adorable baby to a dear great-grandmother, the look is still there. It comes from inside her; not from make-up or fancy hair or jewelry but from an inner peace that she learned about as a girl which comes only from a personal, intimate relationship with Jesus. Mom's life wasn't a bed of roses. She and Dad went through some really rough years when they were young. Having a large garden wasn't a hobby but a necessity to be sure there was enough food for the family. Making her own clothes, making clothes for her children, accepting hand-me-down clothes were ways she helped make ends meet. Mom worked right alongside my Dad as he farmed, even having the children ride on the cultivator as she drove the tractor so she knew where we were. Their farm never produced a lot but they worked hard and provided for their family. In her early journals, she makes notes about work on the farm, late nights birthing piglets, doing laundry, canning food and about how much she spent when she did go shopping. Her journals have notes about our Dad losing his job at Whirlpool and wondering how long he would be off this time, how many hours he worked at Baxter's (he was a butcher) and how much he made a week. Believe me, their lives where not about material things but about family and relationships. And this is where her beauty came from.
Happy Birthday, Mom! May you feel blessed and at peace today.

From my mom's journals
October 28, 1956: Visited the Leidheisers in Elyria--then stopped a few minutes in Lorian to watch a freighter unloading iron ore. Had supper in the car. It was a lovely day but coming home was extra long. The twins were cross and both wanted mommie's attention. Martha and Mary were extra good helpers this morning.
October 28, 1957: Martha missed school. Lydia is feverish again.
October 28, 1972: Review Rom. 8
vs. 32 Since He did not even spare His own Son for us.....won't He also surely give us everything else? Praise the Lord! What can I say to such wonderful things? Psalm 98: 1 "Oh sing unto the Lord a new song, for He hath done marvellous things......" vs. 4 " Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth; make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise."
Thank you, Heavenly Father for Your presence in me!
October 28,1973: Col. 3: 15,16 "Let the peace of Christ....be in your hearts to decide things for you. And be thankful." Let Christ's Word live richly in you as you teach and warn one another, using every kind of wisdom. (Beck)
Amp. N.T. ".....as you teach and admonish and train one another in all insight and intelligence and wisdom in spiritual things, and sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Making melody to God with His grace in your hearts."
October 28, 1974: Ps. 102: 28 A Promise
"The children of Thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee."
Ps. 103: 1 "Bless the Lord, O my soul and all that is within me, bless His holy name."
Praise you Jesus! Thank you Lord!
October 28, 1980: Matt. 11:25-30 Come to Jesus and Rest
vs. 27 "All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father...."
vs. 28 "Come to me, all of you who toil and carry burdens...."
October 28, 1982: Heb. 10: 23-25 Persevere
"Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess for he who promised is faithful."
October 28, 1983: Psalm 71 My Rock
vs. 2 "Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go...."
At the top of many pages in Mom's journals are little diagrams or pictures of how the sky looked on a particular morning. She has the names of the stars visible or the constellations visible followed by a landmark on the farm; above the maple tree in the east yard, above the barn, etc. As children, Mom and Dad took the time to point out various stars and constellations to us. As the seasons changed, the stars and constellations positions changed as well, thus the mention of landmarks on the farm.
Job 38: 31-33 "Can you fasten the chains of the Pleiades or loosen the belt of Orion? Can you bring out the constellations in their season and lead the Bear and her cubs? Do you know the laws of heaven? Can you impose its authority on earth?"

A Glimpse into My Mom's Life from October 16
I have found that reading through my mom's journals has given me a deeper appreciation for the woman she was and is today. Welcome to the family, Baby Gabriel
While making quilts to give away is part of what Mother and Daughters Quilt Ministry does, we also make quilts for our family members. This past week we welcomed the newest member to our family, Gabriel Zane Robbins. Born October 2 to Souraya and Andrew Robbins, son and daughter-in-law of Martha and Ron Robbins. Knowing Gabriel was on the way, we planned and had his Great-Grandmother, Marian Griffin (the mother in Mother and Daughters Quilt Ministry) sew together a special quilt for him. With the help of some "daughters", the quilt was completed and delivered before Gabriel arrived. Welcome to our family, Gabriel. You are already loved by many.
Here is a picture of Gabriel's special quilt.
"For it was You who created my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother's womb. I will praise You, because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made." Psalm 139: 13,14
Lord, bless baby Gabriel and his parents.

Entries from Mom's Journals
It has been a while since I posted entries from my Mom's journals so I better get busy. I went to Ohio for a visit in September. While there, I helped my mom with her quilting by cutting out lots of 3 1/2 inch blocks of brightly colored fabrics. I kept reminding her that they looked like precious jewels, the kind that will be in her heavenly crown. My mom is a rare jewel....even in her twilight years, she is still an amazing woman.
Journal Entries:
October 1, 1956--Sarah is 2 months old. Sarah weighs 10lbs. 4 oz. Last night she had her feeding of cereal at 9pm and slept until 6 this morning! That is the longest nap yet! She is 22 1/2 inches long.
October 1, 1972--(Review) Rom. 8:26
"..the Holy Spirit prays for us (me) with such feeling it cannot be expressed in words. And the Father knows of course what the Spirit is saying as He pleads for us in harmony with God's own will."
Holy Spirit continue to plead for me. Thank you Jesus for your spirit that dwells in me. Lord guide me this day. Triumph over all my stumbling efforts. Let your Gospel story be like a fragrant perfume that draws others. Keep it flowing from my life. Thank you for the fragrance of Christ within me.
October 1, 1982--Psalm 5:3 "In the morning and in the night"
In the morning you hear my voice O Lord; in the morning I prepare [a prayer, a sacrifice] for You, and watch and wait [for you to speak to my heart].
Psalm 63: 5-6 "......and my mouth shall praise You.... When I remember You upon my bed, and meditate on You in the night watches.
One of the blessings of having a Godly mother is that even now, in these twilight years, she still prays blessings for her family. Lord, bless my Mother and give her Your peace. Amen.

My Grandmother, Marian (by Karen)
Valuable lessons my grandma has taught me:
1. How to make root beer, granola, all kinds of yummy healthy cookies and all sorts of other treats.
2. To recycle pretty much everything. She did it before it was the cool thing to do.
3. She taught me to sew a bit, although I wasn't very good at it.
4. She taught me to see others with compassion and love, always giving the benefit of the doubt instead of judging from outward appearances. I NEVER, not even once, heard her speak badly of anyone.
5. That the best things in life truly are free.
6. That the single most important thing in life is knowing Jesus.
Every lesson she taught, she taught by doing. I cherish every summer I got to spend with her as I was growing up. I will never forget waking up to get a glass of water "in the middle of the night" (really around 5 a.m.) and seeing her reading and studying her Bible. She showed me what it means, not to be religious, but to have a relationship with God and live to please him and be a blessing to others.

August 11---From My Mom's Journals
August 11, 1956-- "Started supplemental feeding in evening using 2 parts water- 1 Bakers milk....baby was awake every 2 1/2 to 3 hours all nite."
[The baby she was writing about was me, Sarah. I was 10 days old.]
August 11, 1957-- "There were no church services at the church. We attended SS (Sunday School) and then went to Beulah Beach. For the effort involved it was hardly worth it except to see Mary and Charles a little longer."
[I am not surprised that Mom felt the effort hardly worth it; she had a one year old, me, and two, 2 1/2 year olds, Lois and Lydia, plus Mary and Martha. I can only imagine everything she needed to pack for 5 girls, my Dad and her. There were not fast food restaurants around in 1957!]
August 11, 1972-- " .....the Lord wants to fill our bodies with Himself. 1Cor. 6:13 Living Letters
"Lord Jesus am I withholding my body? Thank you for giving me New Life. What is my problem? Am I afraid to surrender completely to You? Forgive and cleanse me Jesus. I know I need you. Fill me Jesus with your Holy Spirit. Thank you Jesus"

Sharing Mom's Thoughts
Growing up, we would wake up, come downstairs, and find our mom studying the Bible at her desk, the sewing center. She wouldn't just read the Bible, she would journal in her notebook, making notes about what she read. Many of those journals are still at the old homestead. Last year, I asked to have several of her journals sent to me in Florida. It has been interesting to read her thoughts and prayers, and her musings about daily events. Since she dated her entries, I have decided, when possible, to post an entry from her journal for the corresponding date.
August 7, 1974:
Psalm 47:6,7 .....sing praises to God---pray
Psalm 48: 14 "For this God is our God forever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death."
Col. 1:3 "We continually give thanks to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ......as we are praying for you......"
Col. 4:2, 3 "Be earnest and unwearied and steadfast in your prayer life being both alert and intent in your praying with thanksgiving. And at the same time pray for us also......"
My mom was a woman who prayed; not just for her family but for many people. She taught us from a young age that prayer was important. If you are or were in her circle of friends and family, know she has prayed for you. Lord, bless my Mother in her twilight years. May she feel your love and presence with her each and everyday. Amen

Amen

What to Do With All Those Leftover Fabric Scraps
Have you ever wondered what to do with all those scraps leftover from making a quilt or from other sewing projects? Mother and Daughters Quilt Ministry's has that same problem. One thing we have is an "Orphanage". This is a little shelf with lots of drawers originally made to hold screws, bolts, etc. in a workshop, where we keep those leftover cut blocks. Sometimes there are not enough cut blocks left to complete a nine-patch block, so those extra blocks go into the orphanage. We go to the orphanage and get a block to complete nine-patch as well. But what to do with those strips that aren't wide enough to cut a block out of or those pieces of fabric that are leftover from cutting out a sewing project? We do several different things with them. One is to use those really small pieces to stuff fabric, door-draft stoppers. Sew up a fabric tube and stuff it with the scraps. Use it to keep those cold drafts from coming under your door. With the pieces that are still usable for something, we make them in to a modern version of the crazy quilt. By using a fabric foundation piece, you attach those scraps to the top, starting in the middle and working your way out to the edges, stitching and pressing the pieces, keeping all raw edges covered, until the foundation piece is now a little crazy quilt. This is a fun and easy way to use up your scraps. You can then sew the blocks together for a quilt top or make them into potholders. Happy sewing!
Remember, when life gives you pieces, don't get upset, just make a quilt.

Welcome to Mother and Daughters Quilt Ministry
Several years ago the daughters of Marian Griffin decided to organize a quilting plan to help be sure all the children and grandchildren would have a homemade quilt from "Mom" or "Grandma." As the grandchildren got married, we all worked putting together wedding quilts for each couple. Then, as our Mom got older, we decided not to wait until the grandchildren got married to be sure they had a "grandma quilt." So we started working with Mom to create quilts for all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. What we thought would take several years, was completed in less than year. Now, what would we do with the quilt tops being produced? So the idea of a quilt ministry was born. Our mom, Marian Griffin, will be 87 years old and sewing is what she does. With the help of her daughters, her daughter-in-law, her son, and several grandchildren, she gets up, pins and sews nine-patch quilt blocks each day. These blocks are then taken, squared, and put together into quilt tops. The finished quilts are given away. This blog will feature different organizations and individuals who have received quilts sewn by our mom. When possible, we will post photos along with the blogs.
